Who should get the Shingrix shingles vaccine?
The CDC recommends two doses of Shingrix (recombinant zoster vaccine) for healthy adults aged 50 and older to prevent herpes zoster (shingles) and postherpetic neuralgia (severe nerve pain). Adults 19 and older with weakened immune systems are also eligible.
What is the Shingrix 2-dose schedule?
Dose 2 should be administered 2 to 6 months after Dose 1. If more than 6 months have passed since your initial dose, you do not need to restart the series; simply receive the second dose as soon as possible to complete your long-term immunity.
Should I get Shingrix if I previously had shingles or received the older Zostavax vaccine?
Yes. You should receive Shingrix even if you have had shingles in the past, as reinfection can occur. If you previously received the older live Zostavax vaccine (which is no longer available in the US), Shingrix provides significantly higher and longer-lasting protection (over 90% efficacy).
Is Shingrix covered by Medicare and commercial insurance?
Under the Inflation Reduction Act, Shingrix is 100% covered at $0 copay for Medicare Part D beneficiaries. Most commercial health insurance plans also cover Shingrix at zero copay for adults aged 50 and older.
